The first in Czechoslovakia
Písek has an interesting curiosity: The Czechoslovak Republic was declared here two weeks earlier than in the rest of the country, already on October 14, 1918. The whole city was flooded by red and white flags of the new republic. By the afternoon it turned out to be a mistake, and the Hungarian soldiers arrived in the city to settle order. The city is proud of this mistake today.
There are definitely more reasons to be proud: the history of Písek is ringing with gold, panned from the gold-bearing river Otava. You can cross it over the stone bridge, which is the oldest in the Czech Republic and was built in the second half of the 13th century. And the last rarity: Fuzzy clock on the church tower of the Birth of St. Maria, where a small hand shows minutes and big hours!
