A well-trained team is the foundation of a safe journey
Hana Pechačová is one of those people who has been associated with Leo Express practically since its inception. When the company was founded in 2012, she was there right from the start – from the initial preparations right through to the test runs of the new Flirt trainsets. Today, as Head of On-Board Operations, she draws on more than twenty years’ experience in rail transport, particularly when it comes to training staff and establishing processes that have a single aim: to ensure a safe and high-quality journey for every passenger.
Teach not only what, but especially why
Her current position combines several different roles. Hana prepares training for new employees, establishes operational procedures, analyzes operational experience, and regularly goes out onto the trains herself to see how the established processes work in practice.
But what she enjoys most is the training itself. “When someone comes in off the street, all they know is that a train runs on tracks. My job is to show them the bigger picture and explain why we do things the way we do,” she says. In her view, it’s not enough to simply teach employees individual tasks. It’s important for them to understand the purpose behind them. “When they understand the principles, they don’t have to memorize everything. Suddenly, they know why a certain procedure exists and how the individual activities are connected.”
She considers simplicity to be the key. In her view, processes should be understandable and practical so that they help employees rather than complicate their work. She views every emergency or operational complication as an opportunity for improvement. Most emergencies, however, arise from circumstances beyond the carrier’s control—such as a fallen tree or a power outage. “But when we identify the cause and evaluate how we responded to the situation, we can adjust our procedures to best prevent similar situations in the future or minimize their impact. That’s what safety is all about—constantly learning and moving forward.”
Every employee must know not only what to do, but also why. Only then can we offer passengers the same level of service regardless of which route they are traveling on.
Best relaxation? Nature
After work, she likes to close her laptop and go outside. After a few hours at the computer, I need to clear my head. Preferably somewhere in nature." She enjoys traveling (especially to Italy and Greece), swimming, is interested in history, and regularly watches stork nests via webcam. She also relaxes on her terrace garden, where she grows vegetables.
Although she has experience from large international projects, her career plans are very simple. "It's nice to be in a high management position, but I really enjoy training. When I see that people understand why they do their job and then know how to do it well, that's the biggest reward for me." She adds that a well-prepared team is the basis for safe operation - and that's what passengers ultimately know.
