Prague and Ostrava – Meccas of Ice Hockey

Just like nine years ago, the two towns will join forces to organise the ice hockey world championship in May. The Prague Group will feature the home team, while Ostrava is likely to attract the supporters of the Slovak and Polish teams. Let us look at what hockey fans can expect in the two cities apart from hockey.

In the thick of it

This will be the eleventh championship held in Prague. The tournament will take place in the O2 Aréna in Vysočany, 10 km northeast of the city centre, renamed Prague Arena for the time of the championship. The home arena of Sparta Prague hosts a number of sports and cultural events every year. It offers up to 17,360 seats for hockey matches.

🤹🏻 More than ice hockey

Here are several tips. If you go to Prague with your kids, try the Dinopark right next to the arena, on the roof of the Harfa shopping centre. Visitors of all ages also often go to see the Museum of Fantastic Illusions in Vodičkova Street, near Wenceslas Square. Designed by the famous “magician” Pavel Kožíšek, the optical illusions in the exhibition will astonish not only you, but also your followers on social media. If you go to see the matches in Ostrava, do not miss the opportunities offered by the city. If you are keen on technology, the Dolní Vítkovice site is a must – the former iron works transformed into a cultural and social centre attract visitors from far and wide. Your children will enjoy the interactive exhibitions in the two Science and Technology Centres and have fun in the Children’s World. And if you climb the 36-m high Bolt Tower, you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the Moravian-Silesian metropolis.

Ostrava(r) Arena

The Ostrava part of the tournament will take place in the Ostravar Arena (renamed Ostrava Arena for the time of the event). Very attractive matches are expected. Last year’s bronze champion Latvia, the newbie from Poland, and the nearly home team of Slovakia – the combination is likely to attract hosts of fans. The group also includes the US, Germany, Sweden, France, and Kazakhstan.
