Komárno

Komárno is one of the oldest towns in Slovakia. It is situated at the confluence of the Váh and Danube rivers and at the border between Slovakia and Hungary. A Hungarian city Komárom is located on the right bank of the river and the two towns are connected by a railway and road bridge. At every turn you can feel the rich history of the town, which is evidenced by the many religious and other buildings.

Fortress System

Komárno is also home to a real historical unique. The local fortress system built between 1546 and 1877 was the largest and strongest fortification structure of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, which withstood the Tatar invasions. All the main buildings of the original fortification system have been preserved to this day, except for the part on the left bank of the Váh River.

Europe Square

If you're interested in architecture, head to the Europe Square. In this atypical square, you'll find a group of more than 40 buildings designed to represent the architecture and building styles typical of most European countries. Italy, the Vatican, Ireland, Wales and even Transylvania are represented here. The square is completed by historic gates with statues of Hungarian rulers.
