The territory of the town was inhabited since the prehistoric times - in the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Sometimes at the turn of the 6th and 7th centuriy the Slavs inhabited the Settlement Na Valách, where a moat and a brick church were built- a large fortified city-type building. Today, Staré Město is a popular destination for cyclists, because there is a cycle path along Baťa's canal that leads to the city.
