Nearly 25,000 passengers have helped offset their carbon footprint with Leo Express this year

Leo Express is joining this year’s European Mobility Week, which highlights the importance of accessible and sustainable transportation for all generations. From September 16 to 22, the company will therefore transport bicycles free of charge on all its regional routes in the Orlice and Danube regions. The carrier has also been focusing on more sustainable travel in the long term—since the beginning of this year, 24,918 passengers have participated in carbon footprint offsetting, and thanks to their contributions, 76.2 metric tons of CO₂ emissions have been offset.

“This year’s theme for European Mobility Week is very close to our hearts. Public transportation makes sense when it is truly accessible to people across generations and can be part of their daily lives—for example, when traveling to school, work, the doctor, or for leisure activities. That’s why we want to further encourage more sustainable travel, and from September 16 to 22, we’ll transport bicycles for free on all our regional routes in the Orlicko and Podunajsko regions,” says Emil Sedlařík, spokesperson for Leo Express.

This year’s European Mobility Week raises the question of how to create transportation systems that are accessible and usable for children, young people, adults, and seniors, while also taking into account the needs of future generations.

Leo Express also supports the idea of mobility accessible to different generations by offering discounted fares. Children, schoolchildren, students, and seniors traveling on the carrier’s train routes within the Czech Republic in Economy Class receive a 50% discount on their fare. In addition, after scanning their ticket, Leo Express refunds 25% of the full fare to Smile Club members in the form of Leo Credits, which they can use toward future tickets or onboard refreshments.

Railways as Part of More Sustainable Mobility

However, sustainable mobility is not just a matter of accessibility. The environmental impact of individual modes of transportation also plays an important role.

In terms of direct emissions, rail is among the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation. According to the latest data from the European Environment Agency, rail transportation accounted for only 0.3% of direct greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in the EU in 2023.

Leo Express passengers can also voluntarily contribute to offsetting their carbon footprint when purchasing a ticket. In the final step of the booking process, simply select the “CO₂ Offset” option. The amount of the contribution depends on the specific route, the number of kilometers, and the selected travel class.

Leo Express then uses the funds raised to support environmental projects.

In March 2025, the fifth tree-planting event took place as part of the Leo Express initiative aimed at offsetting its carbon footprint, in which passengers can also actively participate through their contributions. Passengers also decide which project Leo Express will support by voting on social media. Together, they have managed to contribute more than 484,000 CZK toward planting 202 trees in Czech and Slovak municipalities. The next tree-planting event is planned for spring 2027.

Since the beginning of 2026, 24,918 passengers have already participated in carbon footprint offsetting. Thanks to their contributions, 76.2 metric tons of CO₂ emissions have been offset.
