Nearly 100% coverage, up to 1.3TB of data consumed

Leo Express launches 5G WiFi on trains and prepares refreshment ordering system

Prague, 14th of October 2024 - Free WiFi on board Leo Express trains is a matter of course. Now the speed has been increased even further with the launch of the 5G network, which has increased on-board internet coverage from 60% to almost 100%. Average daily data consumption per train has increased from 61GB to 313GB, an increase of 400%, and the highest daily consumption per train to date was over 1.3TB, the equivalent of 300 HD movies. The upgrade is the result of extensive testing with telecom operators and is the first milestone in Leo Express' digital transformation plan, which will include the launch of a refreshment ordering system.

"Thanks to 5G technology and a combination of other elements, such as the use of parallel connectivity from multiple telecom operators, namely Vodafone and T-Mobile, internet connectivity on Leo Express trains achieves almost 100% coverage, depending on the availability and utilisation of base stations and mobile transmitters. This allows passengers to stay connected throughout their journey. 5G offers unparalleled speed, stability and ultra-low latency, which is extremely important given the high speeds at which our trains operate," said Richard Erben, IT Director at Leo Express.

Thanks to an investment of around CZK 1.25 million in 5G WiFi, connectivity coverage during the journey has increased from 60% to almost 100%. A train now consumes up to 1.3TB of data per day, which is equivalent to downloading 325,000 songs or around 300 HD movies. "This milestone reflects our commitment to digital innovation and passenger satisfaction. Customers can watch movies and videos from streaming services on board, seamlessly connect to a video call and conduct all work-related business from the train. Students can watch online lectures, and anyone can easily listen to music or podcasts," says Erben.

Online refreshment ordering and travel facilitation for people with disabilities

Ordering refreshments from the steward and having them delivered to your seat is now standard on Leo Express trains. Next year, the online refreshment ordering via the on-board portal and the possibility of upgrading tickets already purchased will be launched. For a fee, customers will be able to upgrade from Economy to Premium class, for example, with even more comfort and refreshments included in the ticket price.

At the same time, Leo Express is constantly striving to improve the accessibility of its trains for all passengers. All Leo Express trains are low-floor, making it easy for passengers in orthopaedic wheelchairs or parents with a child in a pushchair to get on and off the train. In addition, the Leo Express mobile app is adapted for visually impaired passengers with a tailored voice navigation environment, including seat selection in the shopping process. The next step in making travel easier for everyone will be the on-board refreshment ordering system in the on-board portal, which will make the menu fully digital. With these steps, Leo Express will make travel easier not only for people with physical disabilities, but also for passengers with visual and hearing impairments.
